The Fortress of Komalmer
Photograph of the Kumbalgarh Fort from James Burgess' 'Photographs of Architecture and Scenery in Gujarat and Rajputana' taken by Colin Murray in c.1872. The fort of Kumbalgarh, perched on the Aravalli hills, was built by Maharana Kumbha (r.1433-68) and is a fine example of defensive fortification in India. Its strategic location enabled defenders to see the aggressors approaching it from a distance and gave it the reputation as one of the most impregnable forts in Rajasthan. The view shows the massive wall with numerous towers and pierced battlements and the seven fortified gates through which access could be gained. Inside the fort there is the Badal Mahal or Cloud Palace of the Ranas and many ruined temples and tanks.
