The Great Temple of Eklingaji
Photograph of the Ekalinga Temple from James Burgess' 'Photographs of Architecture and Scenery in Gujarat and Rajputana' taken by Colin Murray in c.1872. Eklingji, northeast of Udaipur, is a complex of 108 temples and shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva. This is a general view of the Ekalinga Temple, photographed from outside the boundary wall. The temple is built on the shore of a small lake and it is approached by a flight of steps. The hall or mandapa has finely carved pillars housing a four-faced Shiva image and a silver Nandi. The roof of the sanctuary is made of a cluster of miniature spires. The present structure was built in the 15th Century.
